Hospital Bag Essentials: A Thoughtful, Comfort-First Guide for New Moms
Below are the hospital bag essentials I *consistently* recommend to expecting mothers – based on comfort, practicality, and what actually gets used.
Packing your hospital bag doesn’t need to feel overwhelming – or excessive. In the weeks leading up to delivery, most expecting mothers aren’t looking for more things. They’re looking for reassurance, comfort, and a sense of calm.
This list is intentionally curated. Just thoughtful essentials that prioritize how you’ll feel during labor, recovery, and those first quiet hours with your baby.

Hospital Bag Essentials For Mom: Comfort Comes First
Labor and recovery are exactly the time to prioritize comfort. The items you pack for yourself should feel soft, forgiving, and comforting.
With my first, (my baby girl who is now nearly 18 years old!) I had NO idea what to put in my hospital bag. In fact, funny story, NOBODY told me that I wouldn’t fit pre-pregnancy clothes to go home in. So, yeah…I had to just wear my maternity clothes home. It was a hard-truth for a new mom and it would have been better to just have good information going in.
Think breathable fabrics, easy movement, and pieces that don’t demand effort.
Items I recommend packing include:
- Based on my story above – first – a loose, neutral going-home outfit
- A soft robe or lightweight layer
- Comfortable, nursing-friendly pajamas
- A supportive nursing bra (this link includes hydrating Nipple and Lip Rescue Balm from Hatch!)
- Non-slip socks or cozy slippers
- Simple, travel-sized toiletries you already love
These are the pieces that help you feel human again—not styled, not staged, just comfortable.

For Baby: Simple, Soft, and Minimal
Hospitals provide most baby necessities, which means your role here is simply adding a few personal touches.
You don’t need a ton of options – just intention.
Recommended baby essentials:
- Obviously, the baby bag itself – here’s one of my favorites!
- Soft, neutral going-home outfit
- A name sweater for pictures!!
- A swaddle or blanket you love – PRO TIP! I don’t like the muslin blankets – they don’t stretch.
- Newborn beanie, newborn mittens and newborn booties (especially in the winter!)
- In the winter – you’ll want to bring a light car seat COVER or a heavier car seat cover!
- Pacifier (optional)
- My favorite white noise machine in the world!! A Shusher Firefly.
Less truly is more here. Choose pieces that feel calm and timeless.
Hospital Bag Essentials for the EVER Sexy Recovery
These are the small things that make a big difference – especially during long hours, short naps, and emotional moments.
Often overlooked, always appreciated.
Helpful additions:
- We’ve got the super awesome Post Partum Underwear!!
- Some cooling panty liners, some healing foam (again, comfort – you will want it!), Anesthetic Spray (spray first, then the foam, then the pad!)
- Optional – Uterine Heating Patches
- Silver Nursing Cups
- Disposable Nursing Pads
- Hair ties or a claw clip
- A long phone charging cord
- A refillable water bottle
These items support rest, hydration, and comfort—without clutter.
"Pamper-y" Items just in case you want a little EXTRA
If you’re not overwhelmed at this point, here are a couple extra items that I wanted to include just to make you feel a little more human!
Again, here is the link to our FULL Hospital Bag list on Amazon.
What You Don’t Need to Pack
One of the most comforting things to hear before delivery is this: you don’t need to bring as much as the internet says you do.
Most moms overpack on the hospital bag essentials because they’re trying to feel prepared. In reality, excess often adds stress and just one more thing to bring home.
You can skip:
- Multiple outfit changes
- A full makeup kit
- Large props or accessories
- Too many baby clothes
- Anything that creates clutter or pressure
Your energy is better spent resting—not managing things.
Why This Hospital Bag Essentials List Stays Neutral and Timeless
You’ll notice this list leans heavily toward creams, and neutrals. That’s intentional.
Neutral pieces:
- Feel calmer in emotionally charged moments
- Photograph beautifully if photos are taken
- Transition seamlessly into newborn life at home
Trends come and go. Comfort and simplicity last.
