“Just the Digitals” – Frisco Newborn Photographer – CLJ Photography
“Just the Digitals” – Frisco Newborn Photographer – CLJ Photography
A discussion on the subject.
This would also take in all the reasons why you want “just the digitals”. For instance:
- “We want to share them with family in another state”
- “We don’t print a lot of pictures around our home”
- “Just in temporary housing right now”
- “I just want to share them on social media
You want a photo shoot, therefore, you contact a photographer. Your email inquires to pricing for a shoot. A very typical inquiry. The response is generally a cost – along with what you receive for that cost and typically that’s a number of digital files.
Sound familiar?
CLJ Photography is a full-service portrait studio. From design and creation to tangible art on your walls and in your hands. We carry a line of wall art, heirloom albums and keepsake boxes. We import our products from professional print labs from all over the country and the world. So….
I’m breaking down my top 5 reasons why
I offer more than “just the digitals”.
ONE
Digital files are NOT archival. What does this mean? Years back I shared a video of myself. I had found a 3×3 floppy disk in a box of personal memories. (Does this age me???). For anyone who has no clue what this is, it is much like a USB or flash drive but holds an extremely small amount of data and is very old. I found a neon green floppy disk.
It was my diary.
I keep a digital diary as a young teenager on this disk. I stored it and twenty years later, found it! What a cool thing to find and re-read and pass down to my children. NOPE! Can’t do it. First problem – who’s computer has a drive that this will fit? Second, if I find a computer that has a drive, current technology won’t understand how to open the files and read them. Third problem, even if I found both of those, the data is most likely degraded and corrupted – unreadable at this point.
What did I learn? I probably should have printed it.
Current digital files WILL corrupt. Computers WILL crash. 100 years from now your pictures on Instagram and Facebook – will they even still be around? Your phone certainly won’t.
TWO
You really do want more than digitals. Let’s face it, you want the digital file “the blueprint for your portraits” to create something tangible. The album you want to put together or the birth announcements to send out. A couple images to enlarge for the nursery and to gift to family. A digital file is just a blueprint to purchase other items – the tangible things you want.
THREE
In regards to the tangible things you actually want – Canvas on Demand canvases are not Museum Grade Canvases. Snapfish albums are not heirloom, hand-crafted albums. There is a HUGE difference in quality. They will not last. Not ever. Not even once. The quality of products on these website is consumer grade quality. They are not archival and they will not last for your kids to have and pass down. I want my children to have lasting memories or my great-grandchildren to have those special heirlooms.
Plus, it is actually more work to print your photos on another website. Why wouldn’t you save the extra work and time? Just place an order with your photographer, let them do all the work and get better quality prints back. Easy peasy!
Our gallery website functions almost exactly like a consumer website with options, sizes and easy ordering.
(To be perfectly honest, as a photographer and an artist, controlling the quality of the art I create is also very important to me. The thought of that Walgreen’s print hanging on your walls is a little cringe-worthy! The color is completely off and the contrast is terrible! Many places like this simply hire a person, show them the buttons to push and print. These are not experts by any means on printing correctly. I could go on…)
FOUR
You think you don’t want large portraits on your walls. You don’t print a lot on your walls. But have you ever printed your child’s large? Have you ever purchased a 30×40 framed fine art print?
Maybe you have.
But many people never have done this. They don’t think they want it. But like anything you might not think you want – how will you know until you try it? What if you fall in love with that portrait every time you walk in your home? Or your little child sees it every morning and it makes them smile? I fall in love with client orders ALL. THE. TIME. Not even my family.
I challenge everyone to just experience this purchase once.
(If a portrait on the walls, is not your deal, an album or keepsake box tucked safely on a shelf is the perfect way to keep those memories safe. Ok, so maybe you don’t have a lot of wall space. Maybe you are in temporary housing – it happens.)
FIVE
I am a photographer for a reason. It is not simply something on the side to make some cash. It runs in my blood. I dream of it. It is my calling to bring these special moments to people.
To show women how beautiful pregnancy is.
To remind people that a new human life was created out of their love.
This is a moment to celebrate. It is what matters most.
Your children become your world. Sometimes your stressful, exhausting world – but still your world. That pair of $100 shoes can wait. The new iPhone that just came out for $$$$ can wait. I’ve mentioned this before – the strollers, the cribs, the fancy diaper bags will all be sold at garage sale or donated at some point. 10 years from now, 50 years from now, what you will have are the images and, hopefully, the printed portraits.
It is so important to me in my role as a photographer, to document your journey beautifully and to ensure this portrait will last longer than you and I both. To create an heirloom. To share these moments with each other and with the future generations.
My studio creates memories for your family, not just digital files.
I offer more than “just digitals”. (Although, I do include digital files in my collections.) I offer an experience to remember, portraits to love, and ways to display your portraits so they can be passed down.
Next time you tell your photographer that you just want digitals – ask yourself
- “Is that what you really want?”
- “What is most important to you after you receive those files?”
- “What will you do with them?”
- “Is it the digital file you want? Or just what photographers sell and that is what you know to buy?”
Food for thought. When you walk into a friend’s house – what would be more meaningful? To see a wall full of beautiful images of their moments together ? Or do you ask to sit at their computer and look at those digital files?

So beautifully put. Many families don’t know yet how much they actually do want printed portrait art. I’ve had clients go from “We will probably just purchase the digital files,” to crying at the site of their 20×30 framed wall art. It’s about so much more when you can touch that heirloom.
