It’s easy to get sucked into the idea that anyone is a “photographer”. The truth is that there is an overly saturated market of “so-so” hobbyists in every neighborhood.
“How do you qualify a professional photographer”?
Their work is only one element I look at (although, perhaps the most significant). Another element would be to inspect the way they conduct business. Is there some sort of consultation? Do they have a professional demeanor when they discuss your portraits? How would you describe their equipment? What is the condition and most recent update to their website? Can they easily develop rapport and also make you comfortable with the process?
Most professional photographer will also specialize.
It goes without saying that after doing enough of generalizing of any subject (Math, History, Science and English) that one will find their niche. High school is a smorgasbord of general subjects – but specificity comes in college. The same happens in any profession – there are experts.
Plenty of hobbyists will find mentors, attend conferences and workshops and then their tastes change as they mature into professionals.
My husband, a guitarist, always says, “If a kid wants to start playing music by Green Day, as they progress, I can tell you what types of music they will be playing in two years.” The diversity of mediums and subjects in photography will develop tastes as well.
Choosing your Newborn Photographer…
Most importantly, when qualifying your photographer – their work should take your breath away. These moments are YOURS! They should not just go into the black hole of social media only to be forgotten by next year. These are YOUR moments. YOUR story. YOUR CHILD’S LITERAL BEGINNING. Make sure you love them. Make sure you invest in these, most precious, moments.
