Hillary and Eugene welcomed their newborn baby boy, Ryder, on April 17, 2018.  If you remember, Eugene was in a terrible accident while Hillary was in her second trimester.  He was there for 2 months, in some very scary situations. Her story is here, if you missed it.

What I love most about this story is the happy ending.

Eugene finally went home just a few weeks before the birth of their son.  He was able to be there for her during the delivery.  He was able to be a part of Ryder’s first photo shoot.

I can’t think of a more illuminating story of why these moments are so very important to capture.  We are all human and we are all fragile.  Our existence only lives on through our children and the stories they will tell about us and the photographs of us.  What if we don’t get to be in those photographs?  What if our lives are cut short?  How valuable do the images become that we ARE in?  I am reminded WHY I do this every time I look at these images.  Why photography is so necessary and important and valuable.

But the most important image of all is the FAMILY.

I know moms are exhausted and recovering. In pain, most of the time.  Moms are terribly critical of themselves and Dads can be fairly passive of the whole process.  So, there are a lot of families who pass on the family portrait.

“It’s the baby who is the reason for the pictures.”

So close!…but…

The birth of a child is creating your family new.  Whether first child or last, or middle.  The reason is the legacy you are creating and the human you created who will live their lives and BECOME SOMEONE.  It’s the little girl or boy who BECOMES a big sister or brother.  It’s the wife who BECOMES a Mother.  A husband who BECOMES a Father.   You lives have changed completely forever.

And for this family, the husband who was able to meet his son.  The husband who got to become a Father.  It was nearly taken away from him.

I am honored to have photographed this family in my portrait studio.  I am thankful to God that he’s alive and can be a Dad.  But most of all, I am so incredibly grateful that this little child can have his Dad.
